When designing our “flagship” beer portfolio 10 years ago, we wanted to show beer drinkers how enjoyable a light-dark lager can be all year round. For years, our “lightest” beer was also our darkest. This created both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge was that many drinkers associated dark color with a heavy body that would make them feel full –  but the opportunity to educate and to taste a beer that is so light-bodied yet so full of rich flavor proved to turn their perceptions on its head.

Still, in our view, Schwartzbier remains a highly under-appreciated style, yet we continue to believe that our beloved Blackwing is a world-class beer. That’s why we couldn’t be more proud that it was recognized by the judges of the 2022 World Beer Cup with a Silver Medal! Competing against some of the German brewers that have been brewing Schwartzbiers for more than a century, our little dark lager from Charm City showed them all how we do it in Baltimore.
