“I started out homebrewing,” says fledgeling entrepreneur Jon Zerivitz. “That’s when it really clicked, and I fell in love with getting my hands dirty.”
He’s certainly come a long way since fermenting batches of home brew in his basement. After six years at a marketing job at T. Rowe Price, Zerivitz has left corporate culture behind to open Union Craft Brewing with co-owner and brewmaster Kevin Blodger. On this muggy July day, Zerivitz is gleefully showing me around the Woodberry brewery space. He walks me through the brewing process, from grinding the malt to pitching the yeast. “That’s where the magic happens,” he discloses with a smile.
As brewmaster, Blodger creates the recipes, and his pedigree is impeccable: He began at Frederick Brewing (now Flying Dog) and went on to work as a brewmaster at Gordon Biersch in Chicago. Like Zerivitz, he felt stifled creatively. The two met through a mutual friend and quickly became drinking buddies. After three years of dreaming about opening their own brewery, Union Craft Brewing released their flagship beers, Duckpin Pale Ale and Balt Altbier, to the public on June 29 at Max’s Taphouse.
The pale ale has a wonderful floral nose and citrusy hops, while the Altbier is a dark beer with notes of chocolate, coffee, and pumpernickel bread. For now, the beers are only available in kegs and on draught at area bars and restaurants, but the pair have plans to offer it for sale in cans. In fact, the beers are brewed with cans in mind: “When you open the can of Duckpin Pale Ale, that floral aroma will really hit you,” Zerivitz says.
The dark beer is not as bitter as you might expect, and that, according to Blodger and Zerivitz, is all part of the plan. “For our flagship line, we wanted something very approachable and friendly, not extreme, with an alcohol content under 6 percent,” Zerivitz explains. “We’re beer geeks, but we didn’t want the beers to appeal only to other beer geeks.”

I’m thrilled to finally be able to let the cat out of the bag, now that we have signed a lease on a 7200 sq ft space in Woodberry, right between Meadow Mills & Clipper Mill on Union Avenue. My partner is a seasoned veteran of the brewing industry who was born, and began his career, in the area. He has won several GABF medals, and is excited to return home to brew great beers for the people of Baltimore. We are finalizing our equipment order and will be purchasing a brand new 20 barrel brewhouse within the next week or so.

Today I am going to surprise you. I decided to go on a tour to help better my skills and knowledge and becoming a better 'rounded' spirit, hospitality marketer. That being said, I took a tour of the closest brewery to my home UNION CRAFT BREWING. Greeted by two of the three co-owners Adan Benesch and Jon Zerivitz (seen left to right with CITYPEEK's Patti Neumann in center) in the lobby aka Tasting Room, I started my educated jouney. I learned we all great up in the same part of town, Northwest Baltimore!

L-R: Jon, Adam, & Kevin
Beer unites. That's our philosophy here at Union Craft Brewing. We are three guys brought together by a love of beer, Baltimore and limitless possibilities. While the brew kettle was fired up for the first time in June of 2012, Union Craft took several years of planning to come to fruition.
Over many long days & nights of great beers, google hangouts, in person meetings at our favorite local pubs, and more beer— Adam, Jon and Kevin worked tirelessly to craft a business plan that would help us achieve our goal of opening Baltimore's first production brewery in more than 30 years. Each of us brought a unique set of skills and experience to the mix: Kevin has nearly a decade of professional brewing experience from working at some well respected nationally known breweries; Jon brought a graphic designer's eye combined with sharp marketing skills from his past career and Adam brought financial and operational expertise from his time at a leading venture capital firm. After the business plan was complete and with the support of our amazing wives & families, we took the plunge and began raising the funds to open Union Craft Brewing while searching for the perfect site in the heart of Baltimore.
With funds secured from a supportive group of investors, things began to take off when we found the perfect location next to the Jones Falls in between two great Baltimore neighborhoods, Hampden & Woodberry. Construction began on our space in December of 2011 and was finished in May of 2012.
Inspired by our home town & driven to create community based around quality, locally crafted beers, we brew with a Baltimore heart in the heart of Baltimore. Join us at the brewery for a tour and a taste. Drink local. Drink UNION.
Don't touch that dial! Pull up your Laz-E-Boy and get ready to be blown away by Chef Chad Wells modern reinterpretations of classic TV Dinners. 5 Courses paired with Union beers. $75. Space is limited so call or email sara@rockfish.com for reservations asap!
